Biographical Information
Peleg Franklin Brownell ~ [1857-1946] Canadian OSA, RCA
Peleg Franklin Brownell was born in 1857 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and at the Academie Julian in Paris. In 1887, Brownell moved to Ottawa to become the headmaster of the Ottawa School of Art until 1900. He later became the headmaster of Woman’s Art Association of Ottawa (later known as Ottawa Art Association) until his retirement in 1937. Brownell was elected as a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1895 and the Ontario Society of Artists in 1899.
